“Today we are exploring Stonewood’s latest development, Old Timberyard, here in Wiltshire,” Millie says, introducing a scheme set within the village of Box on the edge of the Cotswolds. The setting gives a good mix between rural peace and everyday ease, with Bath and Chippenham close by, making it, as Millie puts it, countryside living that does not feel remote.

Formerly an active timber yard, Old Timberyard has been reimagined as a collection of 20 sustainably built homes designed by RIBA award-winning architects. Stonewood Homes have taken a fabric-first approach, embedding energy efficiency into the construction from the start. Millie notes how the homes are “stepped into the hillside,” allowing the architecture to follow the land rather than dominate it.

Architecture Shaped by Context
Timber cladding and stone define the exterior, highlighting the site's history as well as durability. “It doesn’t only look beautiful, it is definitely built to last,” Millie explains, pointing to how the materials sit naturally within the landscape. The tranquility is enhanced by the presence of a gently moving creek, offering what Millie describes as “the most beautiful and peaceful sound” to daily life.
Elevated Living Spaces
The open plan kitchen, dining, and living area forms the heart of the home and is clearly designed around family life. Millie observes that it has been “so well thought through for family living,” with defined cohesive zones. The kitchen itself is anchored by a large central island, which she describes as “where you’re going to be spending a lot of your time,” paired with two-tone cabinetry, generous storage, Bosch integrated appliances, and well thought of lighting that can effortlessly transition from functional to ambient.
The kitchen, from the Masterclass range by Sigma 3, is described by Millie as “a real standout.” Handleless cabinetry, a landscape-inspired colour palette, and Silestone worktops reinforce the home’s architectural language, while premium appliances and generous storage support everyday use. The central island, Millie notes, is “such a sociable addition,” designed for family life as well as entertaining.
Courtyard Living
Opening onto a private terrace, the living space extends outdoors to a fully equipped courtyard with lighting, power points, and planting for privacy. Millie points out thoughtful details such as adjustable door locking for ventilation and imagines the space evolving further, suggesting it could easily accommodate a hot tub for relaxed evenings outdoors.
Bedrooms with Calm and Light
The top floor houses two ensuite bedrooms beneath a large skylight that fills the landing with daylight. Both rooms benefit from dual aspect windows and neutral palettes, with Juliet balconies adding a sense of connection to the outdoors. The principal suite is larger and finished with carefully considered details, which Millie notes make everyday living noticeably easier.

As the tour draws to a close, Millie considers Old Timberyard as a development influenced by its history and topography. Combining sustainable construction, architectural restraint, and flexible interiors, it presents a contemporary interpretation of countryside living rooted firmly in its Wiltshire setting.
